By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) may be taking steps towards reunification following a lengthy period of internal strife. Acting Chairman Alberto August has called for a National Party Council (NPC) meeting at the party headquarters in Belize City to discuss the “Party’s Reset and Unification Agenda 2025.”

The meeting’s primary purpose is to address the party’s internal divisions that have plagued the UDP for months. However, it seems that the members who are considered expelled by the current executive are not yet on the same page, particularly Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton, who stated she has yet to receive the official notice from the UDP Secretariat.

Adding to the dynamics, party elder Michael Finnegan appeared on Channel 7 NewsUncut with Jules Vasquez this week, declaring that the party’s internal conflict has concluded – crediting himself as a key broker of this newfound peace. His proclamation, however, was met with skepticism, as many believe the issues within the UDP are far from resolved.

Finnegan’s assertion sets the stage for the upcoming NPC, as the guest list only includes candidates that formally ran under the banner of the current UDP executive. This has raised eyebrows from several prominent members of the Opposition, including Panton, Godwin Haylock, Lee Mark Chang, and Senator Patrick Faber. These are reportedly not invited, as they were not candidates under UDP executive led by Moses “Shyne” Barrow in the 2025 general elections. Previous guidelines released on May 19 stipulate that Panton and others not aligned to Barrow must apologize for their actions, face a convention, and potentially wait until the national convention in October for a chance to regain their standing.

Despite the uncertainty, Finnegan remains hopeful about the outcomes of the June 14 meeting. “By the end of this NPC, I believe the party should unify,” he stated, expressing a desire for all members, including Panton, to rejoin the fold and establish a clear timeline for the national convention.
