By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police say a post-mortem examination conducted on fisherman Samuel Chi has determined his cause of death to be asphyxia due to drowning, while toxicology results remain pending.

Chi disappeared at sea along with Albert Vaccaro after the men went on a fishing trip on Sunday, August 2 and failed to return as expected.

A joint search involving the Belize Coast Guard and other authorities was launched, and Vaccaro was found alive the following day floating in waters southwest of Hicks Caye. Authorities said at the time that he was dehydrated and disoriented and was unable to provide a clear account of what had occurred.

Chi remained missing until his body was recovered the following morning in waters west of Hicks Caye.

During Monday’s police press briefing, authorities said the forensic pathologist found the cause of death to be asphyxia due to drowning. Police indicated that the post-mortem did not establish evidence of violence.

However, investigators are still trying to determine the circumstances that led to Chi and Vaccaro ending up in the water.

Police could not confirm during the briefing whether investigators have since obtained a comprehensive statement from Vaccaro, noting that he was initially too disoriented to provide investigators with much information.

Chi’s family has publicly raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his death and expressed suspicions that foul play may have been involved.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
