Port Layola secure playoff spot as PLB Closing Championship Regular Season nears finish

By Rubén Morales Iglesias:  With three games remaining in the Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2024-2025 Closing Championship regular season, Port Layola have officially clinched a playoff spot, continuing their dominant run. The current standings, based on Week 7 data, show Port Layola leading with 19 points, guaranteeing their place in the top four.

Progresso FC are also on the verge of qualification with 13 points. While Belmopan FC could theoretically tie their point total, Progresso’s goal difference makes their qualification highly probable.

Verdes FC (12 points) and San Pedro (8 points) are in strong positions to secure the remaining playoff berths. Although Belmopan FC(4 points) and Wagiya (2 points) still have a mathematical chance of advancing, it is highly unlikely given the current standings. For all intents and purposes, Verdes and San Pedro are expected to round out the semifinalists.

However, should Belmopan FC play their last three matches at the level they displayed when they beat Verdes 3-1, they stand a chance.

Here’s a summary of the current standings:

* 1. Port Layola (19 points): QUALIFIED

* 2. Progresso (13 points): Virtually Qualified

* 3. Verdes (12 points): Likely to Qualify

* 4. San Pedro (8 points): Likely to Qualify

* 5. Belmopan FC (4 points): Unlikely to Qualify

* 6. Wagiya (2 points): Unlikely to Qualify

The PLB Closing Championship is heading towards an exciting conclusion, with Port Layola aiming to maintain their lead and the other teams battling for the remaining playoff positions.
