By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola played with heart and soul, pushing forward but fell 4-1 to Guatemala’s Antigua GFC at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan in their opening Concacaf Central American Cup match.

Antigua jumped ahead in the 14th minute when captain José Ardón shook the net defended by Colombian goalkeeper Oscar Palomino.

Under pouring rain, Port fought back and drew even in the 33rd minute when Rene Leslie hammered a cross from Latrell Middleton.

Port scored again in the 42nd minute, but the strike was ruled offside.

Antigua came out strong in the second half and took the lead in the 58th minute with a second goal by Ardón. Coach Charlie Slusher made a number of changes which didn’t produce the desired effect. Gilroy Thurton entered the game for Orlando Velasquez, and Jarrel Young replaced Latrell Middleton in the 59th minute. Then, Leocadio Briceño replaced Leslie in the 65th minute.

Middleton and Leslie had been more of a menace to Antigua’s defensive line.

As Port attacked to try to even the score, Antigua captain Ardón secured the third, completing his hat trick in the 69th minute.

Slusher made two more changes in the 85th minute, taking out Colombian Andrés Orozco and inserting Jesse August, but to no effect.

Antigua responded with their fourth goal courtesy of Dennis Ramírez in the 87th minute.

All of Antigua’s goals came from open play, as did Port Layola’s.

Naim Wilson and Orozco were booked in this match.

After that, their next two matches are away from home. On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, they face El Salvador’s Águila at Santa Tecla’s Estadio Las Delicias at 4:00 pm. Their final group match will be against CA Independiente (CAI) at Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

Before that, Port will have an opportunity to watch two of those three opponents as Olimpia hosts CAI at Honduras’ Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés in Tegucigalpa at 8:00 pm on Thursday, August 1.
