By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola announced on Monday, one day ahead of the Concacaf Central American Cup match against Honduran club Olimpia, that Coach Charlie Slusher would no longer be at the helm of the team and thanked the now Head Coach of the Belize Men’s National Team.

“RESPECT! THANK YOU!!!” Port Layola said in a social media post that made the announcement.

“Thank You, Coach Carlos Slusher!

“We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Coach Carlos Slusher for his incredible leadership and dedication as the head coach of Port Layola. Under his guidance, our team achieved greatness and won the championship, bringing pride and joy to all of us.

“Thank you, Coach Slusher, for the countless hours, hard work, and passion you poured into this team. Your legacy will always be a part of Port Layola’s history. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors!”

Slusher told Breaking Belize News that from the time he was appointed BMNT Head Coach he advised Port Layola to get a new coach and made a number of recommendations.

Slusher said that he has been dedicating his time to the BMNT and he thought it best that the new coach take over ahead of the upcoming Central American Cup games, the first of which is on Thursday.

“I want to thank the Football Federation of Belize for this opportunity and my former team Port FC for the opportunity I had working with them and for their full support and understanding as I move on to dedicate my work to the National Men’s A Team of Belize,” Slusher said in a social media post on Monday in which he announced that he had officially started a new chapter in his coaching career. Slusher said being the BMNT Head Coach comes “with great responsibility and expectations for which I am fully committed to take on.”

Julius Dawson, the Assistant Head Coach, takes over from Slusher and will lead Port Layola against Honduran champions Olimpia.

“I informed the management and owner from early July, as soon as I got a new appointment, that I would have to leave. I didn’t renew any contract with them, so I was just holding out with them until they got a replacement,” Slusher told Breaking Belize News.

“They said that for the meantime they wanted me to work with the assistant coach who has been with the team for the last two to three years.”

The announcement also came after Port Layola fell 4-1 to Guatemala’s Antigua GFC last week and played to a scoreless 0-0 against the San Pedro Pirates on Sunday in the opening weekend of the 2024-2025 Premier League of Belize Opening Season.
