The funeral Mass, held in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, drew hundreds of thousands of mourners from across the globe, including world leaders, clergy, and ordinary faithful.
Following the Mass, Pope Francis’ coffin was carried in a solemn procession through the streets of Rome, passing iconic landmarks such as the Roman Forum and the Colosseum.
Vatican News reported that 250,000 people gathered for the Requiem Mass, while 150,000 lined the streets to offer prayers and bid farewell to Pope Francis.
The procession concluded at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, a site of deep personal significance for the late pontiff. Known for his devotion to the icon of Mary Salus Popoli Romani housed within the basilica, he was interred nearby, becoming the first pope in over a century to be buried outside Vatican City. This departure from tradition reflected his lifelong rejection of opulence and commitment to simplicity. Pope Francis tirelessly advocated for peace and was committed to bridging divides.
The burial ceremony, presided over by Cardinal Camerlengo, followed the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis, the traditional rite for papal funerals. The zinc-lined wooden coffin, a humble yet fitting choice reflecting his values, was carried with reverence as prayers and blessings echoed through the basilica. Mourners from all walks of life gathered to pay their respects, united in grief and gratitude for a leader who championed mercy, inclusion, and justice.
