By Aaron Humes: Both a police officer and the man suspected of shooting him and at other officers while trying to get away are recovering after their encounter Sunday night.
According to Police Commissioner Chester Williams, the incident occurred just before midnight when officers received information about a male suspect carrying a firearm inside the nightclub’s compound. Upon arrival, a corporal and another officer observed a man fitting the description provided and attempted to approach him. The suspect, armed with a firearm, opened fire on their vehicle, prompting the officers to exit and engage. During this exchange, the corporal was shot four times. Fortunately, he was quickly rushed to the hospital where he received treatment and has since been released. “He is in good health and good spirits at this time,” Commissioner Williams reported.
After shooting the senior officer, the suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle heading towards the Sandhill area. Police there were alerted, and they quickly set out to intercept the suspect. As officers approached him on the highway, the suspect again fired multiple shots at their vehicle, causing significant damage.
Officers were able to maneuver their vehicle and knock the suspect off his motorcycle, successfully detaining him. A nine-millimeter pistol was recovered. Following his apprehension, the suspect was also taken to the hospital for treatment and has since been released into police custody, where he awaits formal charges.
