By Zoila Palma: The Belize Police Department continued its youth-focused programming on Thursday, July 30, with Day 4 of the National Police Youth Cadet Corps Summer Camp 2026, featuring a day of competition, leadership development and talent showcases.
The activities included a Foot Drill Competition, where regional teams demonstrated discipline, teamwork, precision and coordination while performing various drill movements and reciting the Belize Police Youth Cadet Corps Pledge. The Northern Region emerged as champions, while the Eastern Region placed second.
The competition was adjudicated by Dangriga Town Mayor Robert Mariano, retired Police Inspector Matthew Lopez and Commander of the Community Oriented Policing Unit, Senior Superintendent Gerald Jones.
The Police Department said the event sought not only to test the cadets’ ability to perform drill movements accurately and in synchronization, but also to instill values including respect, responsibility, perseverance, leadership, compassion, morale and good sportsmanship.
The day’s activities concluded with the Cadet Glamorous Pageant Night, celebrating the creativity, confidence and talents of Belize’s youth. Cadets competed in segments including casual wear, talent showcase, formal No. 1 cadet uniform and evening wear, with Athena Azueta of Roaring Creek, representing the Western Region, crowned the winner.
The summer camp is a flagship initiative of the Community Oriented Policing Unit aimed at strengthening trust and positive relationships between young people and police officers while developing skills in leadership, teamwork, communication and problem-solving.
