By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Belize Police Department is facing challenges in serving a subpoena to 46-year-old Jarod McKay, also known as Jerod Mackay, who assaulted Commissioner of Police Chester Williams during the Orange Walk Carnival in September 2024. Police believe McKay has left the country and returned to the United States, making it difficult to bring him before the court.
McKay pleaded guilty to aggravated assault against the Commissioner and was fined $1,505 by Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola on September 24, 2024. However, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has appealed the case, seeking a harsher penalty.
The appeal was set to be heard on March 7, 2025, before Justice Derick Sylvester in the High Court. However, neither McKay nor the Crown’s attorney, Alifah Elrington, appeared in court. Elrington submitted a letter requesting an adjournment due to her absence from the country. Meanwhile, McKay has yet to be served his subpoena, preventing any further legal action.
Commissioner Williams has publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the initial sentence, stating that McKay physically grabbed his shirt after being confronted about consuming alcohol in public. Williams previously remarked that McKay, a U.S. Army veteran, would have faced far harsher consequences if the incident had occurred in the United States.
As the case remains in limbo, Justice Sylvester has adjourned the matter indefinitely until McKay is located and formally served with the subpoena.
