By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police say the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Ricky Dawson Jr. in Santa Elena Town appears to have been drug-related, and two people have since been detained for questioning.
Dawson, a construction worker from the Santa Cruz area, was shot on Friday night near his home on San Leopold Street. Police responding at approximately 8:45 p.m. found his motionless body in a drain about 100 yards from his residence.
Initial investigations indicate that Dawson arrived home at around 8:20 p.m. and received a telephone call. While he was outside answering the call, a black SUV reportedly approached and its occupants opened fire in his direction. Dawson was transported to the San Ignacio Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
During Monday’s police press briefing, authorities said Dawson was known to police but investigators do not believe his murder was connected to another recent incident. Police are reviewing surveillance footage from cameras in the area.
Two people were detained on Monday morning and were expected to be interviewed as the murder investigation continues.
