Police stopped him because he was acting suspicious and busted him with crack; fined $300

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 59-year-old North Front Street resident is facing a $305 debt to the court after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled drug.

Sanansermo Torres appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate in Court #1 last week, where he was read a single charge for possessing 0.2 grams of crack cocaine. Torres pleaded guilty and was fined $300 plus a $5 cost of court. In default of payment, he faces three months imprisonment.

According to police, Torres was busted on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, while officers were conducting operations at the New Road police checkpoint. Around 11:00 a.m., officers observed Torres exiting #103 New Road wearing a cap and long pants. When he noticed police, he reportedly began walking quickly, prompting officers to pursue him.

During the chase, officers say they saw Torres release an item from his hand. Two cops later recovered the object, which was wrapped in foil paper and contained a white, buffy substance suspected to be crack cocaine.

Torres’ guilty plea brought the matter to a quick conclusion, leaving him with a fine to settle or the possibility of jail time.
