By Aaron Humes: Police investigations continue into the sudden killing of one of their own on Friday night, October 10.
As detailed by ASP Stacy Smith, Staff Officer of the Belize Police Department, “At approximately 9:30 PM, San Ignacio police received information of shots being fired in Unitedville, Cayo. Police responded, and upon police response, the body of Oswald Young, a police officer of Unitedville Village, was observed to be exhibiting gunshot wounds. The investigation so far has revealed that at the aforementioned time, Young was awaiting transportation to Belize City to come and work at the Belama Precinct Four police station. It is reported that at that time, an unknown male person approached him and fired several shots, which resulted in his untimely demise. No motive has been ascertained so far.”
Reports are that at least one person was detained the night of the incident, but has since been released.
Echoing the remarks of Minister Kareem Musa that the killing was “an attack on the rule of law,” ASP Smith offered the Department’s condolences and remembrance of Constable Young: “He has been a police officer for the past 23 years, and at the time of his passing, he was working at the Belama Police Station. It is a loss that the department has taken with great concern, and certainly it is one that the department is interested in conducting an investigation into with the hopes of bringing those persons responsible to justice.”
And while the Government release made no mention of it, Young was previously on interdiction, facing charges of robbery of the Toledo Teachers’ Credit Union (TTCU) and an unrelated charge of drug trafficking.
