By Aaron Humes: On Friday morning in Corozal Town, Arnaldo “Don Colo” Vellos, the uncle of Mayor Rigo Vellos, was shot just before 9:00 am in the Finca Solana area.
Assistant Commissioner Hilberto Romero, Head National Crimes Investigation Branch, detailed what happened to reporters today: “Investigation revealed that Vellos was heading toward his vehicle when he was approached by two [men], one of whom pulled out a firearm and fired several shots toward his direction, causing his fatal injuries. We are seeking three suspects in relation to this murder…[The information] we are receiving is that it was drug-related.”
According to eyewitness accounts, two men arrived at Vellos’s residence earlier in the day asking for him, but he was not at home at the time. Shortly thereafter, Vellos returned, and one of the men, believed to have been waiting nearby near Vellos’s vehicle, approached him and fired two shots at close range, striking him in the head. Witnesses reported that after Vellos collapsed, the gunman fired two additional shots toward a family member who attempted to assist him.
Police have described the killing as a targeted execution, stating that both Vellos and the men they are seeking are known to them.
Investigations continue.
