By Aaron Humes: Police are actively pursuing a second suspect following the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Zeldon Thompson during an attempted robbery at Anna’s Supermarket on the George Price Highway Saturday evening.
According to police, the incident unfolded around 5:40 PM when Thompson and another masked individual entered the supermarket armed and demanded money from the proprietors. The store owner, fearing for his life and the safety of his family, fired at the robbers.
Police have indicated that the second suspect managed to escape the scene. Staff Officer Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith gave details: “One of the proprietors, who is the holder of a licensed firearm, being in fear of his life and that of his family members, fired 3 shots at the individuals who then fled the establishment. While the officers were on the scene, they were advised that some area not too far from where the incident occurred, a male person with gunshot wounds was observed. This male person was later identified to be 21-year-old Zeldon Thompson, and he was observed to be exhibiting 2 gunshot wounds and was subsequently rushed to the hospital for treatment, but died while undergoing a medical procedure around 7:00 PM. Both scenes were processed by scenes of crime technicians, and several items of evidential material were recovered in this ongoing investigation.”
Investigators recovered several critical pieces of evidence, including a ski mask, a knife, and a motorcycle, along with three spent shell casings that were recovered from the crime scene. These items are being analyzed by scenes of crime technicians as the investigation progresses.
As the investigation continues, police emphasize the importance of public cooperation in apprehending the remaining suspect.
