By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Belize Police Department is exploring the use of artificial intelligence to strengthen its surveillance and investigative capabilities as part of efforts to modernize law enforcement.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith discussed the initiative during Sunday’s emergency police briefing.
Smith explained that surveillance technology operated through the Crime Fusion and Operations Centre has already played an important role in identifying vehicles and suspects connected to recent shootings and robberies.
She cited the investigation into the murder of Dodrick Madrill and the Taylor’s Alley shooting as examples of cases in which surveillance footage significantly advanced police investigations.
According to Smith, the department is seeking additional resources that would allow it to incorporate artificial intelligence into monitoring and analysis.
The technology could potentially reduce the number of officers required to monitor camera systems manually, allowing additional personnel to be deployed on the streets.
When questioned about privacy and the possibility of external organizations accessing sensitive information, Smith emphasized that the Police Department remains conscious of constitutional protections and national security considerations.
She explained that discussions with a prospective international partner concern possible financial assistance for the technology.
Smith maintained that the arrangement was not intended to provide outside entities with access to citizens’ private information.
No implementation date or funding agreement was announced.
