By Aaron Humes: The tragedy of Angelita Magaña and her two young children has left Belizean society shaken and sparked a nationwide conversation surrounding the urgent issue of domestic violence. Their murder has ignited a powerful outcry for change and accountability in the protection of women and children from violence.
In the aftermath, the Office of the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children issued a statement condemning the violent acts and calling for immediate accountability from law enforcement agencies. The statement highlighted significant concerns over unanswered domestic violence hotlines and 911 calls, essential resources that victims rely on in times of crisis. It emphasized the need for immediate action from police and judicial systems, calling for a comprehensive review of bail procedures in domestic violence cases and stricter enforcement of restraining orders.
In response today, Staff Officer Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith addressed the situation surrounding Magaña and her children, repeating condolences but also reiterating the importance of understanding the extent of police interaction with Magaña before the tragic event.
ASP Smith clarified that no formal report had been filed by Ms. Magaña at the time leading up to the incident. “I can categorically say that no report was made by Ms. Magana at the time, or leading up to that incident. The extent of Ms. Magana’s interaction [with] the police, based on interviews that were conducted with the officers in that location, shows that Ms. Magana visited the station and asked for advice. Should Mr. Godoy interfere with her, she would advise that if that should happen, she should make a report to the police. She should also go to the Magistrate’s Court to obtain a restraining order, and she should also visit the office of the DPP and advise them that he was in breach of the conditions of his bail. The circumstance at hand, I need to reiterate categorically that absolutely no report was made,” she explained, adding that police would have determined whether a crime was committed, or there existed a state of fear that would have justified bringing Godoy in, and he would have been detained or, at the very least, spoken to.
Smith also mentioned that Ms. Magaña had filed two reports in the past, both of which police acted upon, and she suggested that had a report been made regarding the current situation, actions would have been implemented accordingly.
The need for systematic changes in how domestic violence cases are managed has now become a rallying point for advocates across the nation. Community leaders and women’s rights organizations are demanding the implementation of stronger policies regarding domestic violence reporting and intervention. They argue that preventive measures and more robust response mechanisms can potentially save lives and protect vulnerable individuals.
