By Zoila Palma: Today, 20 police officers are being trained in Conflict Mediation through the support of RESTORE Belize.
Commander of Community Policing Howell Gillett explained that officers will be equipped with tools that go beyond policing—they will be equipped with the skills of peacebuilding.
“This training is not just about understanding conflict; it is about learning how to prevent it from escalating into crime. Through lectures, discussions, and role plays, they will explore the art of communication, active listening, and mediation. They will learn how to de-escalate disputes on the streets, between neighbors, and even within families. These are not small skills—they are life-changing, community-strengthening skills,” Gillett said.
“The Belize Police Department is committed to building safer and stronger communities, and mediation is one of the keys to achieving that vision. When officers are able to resolve conflicts fairly and impartially, they build trust. When they listen and understand, they strengthen relationships. And when they use these skills in their daily duties, they not only enforce the law—they create peace,” he added.
Gillett says that these skills they will gain will ripple out into the communities they serve, and together, we will make Belize safer, stronger, and more united.
