By Aaron Humes: DeAndre Reid, a police officer dismissed for killing the Governor-General’s dog, has won his appeal before the Belize Advisory Council. The council ruled on August 5 that Reid’s dismissal was unlawful due to procedural irregularities.
The incident occurred in May 2024, when Reid shot and killed the Governor General’s dog while on duty at the Governor General’s residence. Reid claimed the dog was aggressive and had attacked him. He was subsequently charged with discharging a firearm without authorization and fined $250. However, then-Commissioner of Police Chester Williams dismissed Reid from the Belize Police Department in July 2024, citing the officer’s actions as “unacceptable”.
Reid appealed the decision, arguing that his rights to due process and natural justice were violated. The Belize Advisory Council agreed, finding that Reid was not given the required 5-day period to respond to accusations or a 7-day notice before the disciplinary hearing. This, the Council ruled, was a serious procedural failing that rendered the dismissal unlawful.
The Council’s decision sets aside the Commissioner’s decision to dismiss Reid. It’s unclear as yet whether Reid will return to active duty.
