Police officer injured to foot in accidental negligent discharge of firearm

By Aaron Humes: A police officer was injured early this morning Thursday, after an accidental discharge of his service weapon in front of the Precinct No. 1 police station on King Street. The incident occurred around 7:55 a.m. when the 33-year-old officer attached to the Special Patrol Unit (SPU) accidentally shot himself in the foot while handling his firearm.

According to the initial investigation, the officer taking over duties at the station cleared two service weapons and handed one to the officer. While he was clearing and loading his service weapon in the Ford Ranger pick-up outside, it accidentally discharged, resulting in an injury to his left foot.

Emergency personnel transported him to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), where he was admitted and is currently in stable condition.

The Police Department has not disclosed whether any disciplinary actions will follow pending the outcome of the investigation, which is underway.
