Police officer charged after allegedly lashing ex in back with broom, dragging her by hair, slapping her with cast-iron frying pan; Woman tries to drop charges but court doesn’t allow her

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A serving police officer attached to the Belama Police Station is out on bail after being charged with harm following allegations that he assaulted his ex-common-law wife during a domestic dispute in Lord’s Bank.

Police Constable Marvin Card, 20, appeared before the Chief Magistrate on Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty to a single charge of harm against his 21-year-old ex-common-law wife.

Card told the court that tensions between the former couple had been building around the his ex’s birthday celebrations. He claimed that after giving her money to enjoy her birthday and later returning home, an argument developed when she said she was going back out. According to Card, the dispute escalated further after she received a phone call from another man who allegedly asked where she was. Card claimed the call reignited the argument and alleged that the woman later came outside armed with a brown glass pint bottle, a cast-iron object and a cup. He maintained that video footage captured what actually occurred during the confrontation.

According to the police report, the woman visited the Ladyville Police Station on September 19 and alleged that, at around 10:42 p.m. the previous night, Card entered her apartment in Lord’s Bank and assaulted her.

She alleged that Card slapped her across the face, struck her across the back with a broom, dragged her from the apartment by her hair and then hit her across the face with a cast-iron frying pan, causing her pain.

Police issued the woman with a medico-legal form, and her injuries were later classified as harm. Card was subsequently located and charged.

In court, however, prosecutors informed the Chief Magistrate that the woman was outside the courtroom and wanted to withdraw the charge.

The Chief Magistrate did not immediately allow the matter to be withdrawn and instead spoke privately with the parties before directing the woman to the Belize Family Court to seek a protection order.

An interim protection order was subsequently granted, and the Family Court matter is scheduled to be heard on September 30, 2026.

Card also gave the court his version of events, claiming that it was the woman who had attacked him during the dispute with a bottle, a cast-iron object and a cup. He further alleged that video footage existed which captured the incident.

Following the court’s intervention, Card was granted bail in the sum of $3,000 plus one surety of the same amount.

As part of his bail conditions, he must remain at least 100 feet away from the woman and report to the Precinct 4 Police Station every Wednesday between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The criminal matter is scheduled to return to court on November 9, 2026.

Robinson is expected to make a further statement to police if she continues to indicate that she does not want the prosecution to proceed.
