By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a robbery that resulted in the fatal injury of a 55-year-old truck driver for Caribbean Chicken, Mark Anthony Gabourel, 55, of a Belmopan address.
On Wednesday, January 7, about 4:35 p.m., police responded to a report of a robbery on Mountain View Boulevard in Belmopan. Upon arrival, they observed an ambulance parked next to a Caribbean Chicken truck on the side of the road. They also observed a male person with an apparent gunshot wound to his body, identified as Gabourel.
Initial investigations revealed that at about 4:30 p.m., Gabourel, who was accompanied by a 15-year-old Belizean deliveryman, was exiting the compound of an establishment when two men rode in front of them on a Meilun motorcycle. The passenger of the motorcycle fired several shots toward the truck, one of which struck Gabourel. The driver of the motorcycle then attempted to open the door of the truck, but was unsuccessful. The two men thereafter rode off. Gabourel was transported to the Western Regional Hospital for medical treatment; however, he succumbed to his injuries.
Police this evening say they have reviewed various video footage and have detained several persons for questioning. According to a family member, Gabourel was previously targeted last year, but refused to carry a firearm as he was allowed to do, according to his boss. He leaves behind two teenage daughters.
