Police make arrest in fake sofa sale

By Aaron Humes: A Hattieville village man has been charged with theft of monies paid to buy a white leather sofa which was never delivered.

26-year-old Austin Alexander Williams, security guard of East Windmill area, Hattieville village, Belize District was arrested on Saturday and charged for the crime of theft.

According to the initial report, the complainant said that on January 26, she was scrolling through Facebook Belize Buy and Sell page, when she saw a white leather sofa on sale for $1,450.

The complainant communicated with the author of the post via Facebook Messenger. The writer stated the sofa is available, but it is in Placencia.

On Monday, the complainant was given an Atlantic Bank account number via telephone for her to deposit the money. She then visited the bank and deposited $1,450 into the above account. She then tried contacting her contacts and was not successful. Up to this time, the complainant has not heard from either of the persons she spoke to, or received the sofa.
