Police issue tips and warnings after highway slaughter of deliverymen

By Aaron Humes: The Christmas season has also proven to be high season for robbers, burglars and thieves targeting that which others legitimately made.

Following the double murder and robbery last Friday of deliverymen Raynord Raymond Garbutt, Jr., and Robert Alexander Crawford on the Hummingbird Highway, travelers are asked to be cautious in distinguishing between legal, regular checkpoints manned by various law enforcement agencies and irregular, illegal obstructions, which may be traps for nefarious activity. This is because the men stopped for a single cone in the middle of the highway, allowing their killers to catch up with them.

ASP Stacy Smith, Staff Officer for the Belize Police Department, also warned about carrying large sums of money on delivery trucks, armored or otherwise, which make tempting targets for thieves: “I will similarly want to advise businesses to move away from financial transactions that involve money. Electronic transactions are the safest and especially so when you do not have a security mechanism in places this leaves those employees exposed because they are known to be traveling with proceeds of whatever delivery that they make. While we continue to do our part, and we did in fact deploy operational efforts in that area as a consequence of the last incident, we still ask that members of the public do their necessary due diligence in terms of taking care of themselves. This issue can only be addressed by a combination of police efforts as well as citizens playing their parts in terms of sharing information, and also those citizens being security conscious and alert when it is that they are traveling.”
