By Aaron Humes: The Belize Police Department has issued helpful reminders on how to safely enjoy the Easter holidays, wherever you may be.
Most are aware of the classic aphorism, ‘If you drink, don’t drive.’ But it also applies to bicycles as well as to use of medication and other drugs, as ability to operate any mode of transportation can be limited by any mind or mood-altering substance use.
Therefore, make use of a sober designated driver or other means of transportation and steer clear of any driving hazard, including speeding or driving too slowly.
When leaving home, ensure all doors and windows are locked and deadbolted but leave the lights on either inside or outside to ensure potential burglars can be seen. Ensure valuable possessions cannot be seen from outside your home and remove tools and overgrown plants to reduce the number of hiding spots for burglars. Also, inform trusted neighbours when you are leaving and ask them to keep a lookout.
For swimming trips, never go or be alone. Especially in the case of children, ensure that there is continuous supervision by adults with no distractions and in pairs, with life jackets where possible. If a child does go missing, check the water first and be prepared to call 911 in cases of emergency.
Be prepared, be safe and enjoy your Easter weekend responsibly.
