By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police are investigating whether a Belize City call center employee was killed simply because he was wearing the wrong color shirt in the wrong neighborhood.
Twenty-five-year-old Eric Nelson was fatally shot on Saturday evening while walking along Lakeview Street in Belize City. According to investigators, Nelson was not known to police as a gang member and had no known gang affiliations.
Police say the shooting occurred around 6:58 p.m. when Nelson was walking with another individual. A gunman reportedly emerged from behind a fence and fired a single shot, striking Nelson and causing fatal injuries.
ASP Stacy Smith explained that investigators have not yet established a definitive motive but are examining the possibility that heightened tensions following the killing of Kiffer McKenzie earlier that day may have contributed to the attack.
According to police, Lakeview Street is associated with the Majestic Alley area, and investigators believe there may have been a misidentification.
Reports indicate Nelson was wearing a red shirt at the time of the shooting. Investigators are exploring whether the gunman may have mistaken him for someone connected to a rival group due to the color of his clothing.
ASP Smith stressed that Nelson was not known to police and that officials are actively pursuing leads to identify those responsible.
Police continue their investigation as they work to determine exactly what led to the fatal shooting and bring those responsible before the courts.
