Police investigate brutal murder of young construction worker in Corozal

By Horace Palacio: A construction worker, identified as 21-year-old Romulo Antonio Barillas, was found dead on Friday, February 2, 2024, in a bushy area near 3rd Street North, Corozal.

The Corozal Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) reported that Barillas’ body, dressed in a black T-shirt, long jeans, a black rag tied around his head, and brown boots, was discovered lying on its left side, exhibiting severe chop wounds to the head, face, and neck. The incident occurred approximately 25 feet from the street, where the young man from Trial Farm, Orange Walk Town, met a violent end.

Initial investigations revealed that Barillas had traveled from Belize City to Corozal on Monday, January 29, 2024, to work on a construction project for Tropical Holdings Ladyville Limited. He, along with other workers, was staying in Corozal for the week. On the day of the murder, around 10:30 am, Barillas left the work site and was reportedly drinking in the vicinity of where his body was later found.

At approximately 2:20 pm, after failing to return to work, his co-workers initiated a search and stumbled upon the tragic scene, immediately alerting the authorities.

A machete with an orange handle, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered at the site. Following the discovery, the body was transported to Corozal Community Hospital, where a medical examiner pronounced Barillas dead at 4:38 pm. The body has since been moved to the morgue to await a post-mortem examination.

The police have since detained a person as part of the ongoing investigation into Barillas’ murder.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
