By Horace Palacio: An investigation into the report of a sexual assault against a U.S. tourist in San Pedro has led to the arrest and charging of a local man.
The woman, who was vacationing in Belize with her brother, told police that on Thursday night, March 20, they were at Wayo’s Bar and Grill in the Boca del Rio area when they met a man who introduced himself as “Omar.” According to the report, the man joined the siblings as they visited other spots on the island.
In the early hours of Friday morning, around 3:00 a.m., the group returned to their hotel. While her brother went inside, the woman agreed to take a drive with “Omar.” She said he drove her north of the island to a secluded wooden gazebo over the water, where he allegedly raped her before dropping her back at the hotel.
The woman sought police assistance on March 22. Officers acted swiftly, recording statements and arranging a medical examination, which confirmed her injuries as wounding.
Through surveillance footage and investigative efforts, police identified the suspect as Oscar Noe Nal, a 35-year-old Belizean laborer residing in the San Mateo area. Officers recovered the clothing he had worn the night of the incident and conducted an identification parade, during which the victim identified Nal as the attacker.
Nal was formally charged with rape on Sunday, March 23. Police say the case remains open as they continue their investigation.
