By Aaron Humes: The community of Medina Bank, Toledo District, is reeling after 50-year-old Alcalde Romano Cal was killed in a violent dispute with his brother, Rafael Cal, on the evening of May 25. The brutal event has prompted calls for peace and justice from the local Alcaldes Association.
Police report that at approximately 8:10 PM, officers responded to a report at a residence in Medina Bank, where they discovered Romano Cal’s lifeless body exhibiting severe chop wounds to the upper body. Authorities quickly transported him to Punta Gorda Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stacy Smith confirmed that the investigation is in its early stages and stated, “The matter is currently under investigation, and police are seeking Mr. Rafael Cal, who is the relative of Mr. Romano Cal.” However, as of now, the motive behind the violent altercation remains unknown.
Witnesses report that the brothers may have been involved in some form of dispute that escalated tragically, although police have not confirmed whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident. When asked about any prior violent tendencies or legal issues concerning Rafael, ASP Smith remarked, “We have not ascertained any information to that effect so far.”
The Toledo Alcaldes Association has publicly expressed their sorrow, offering condolences to Romano Cal’s family and the entire Medina Bank community. In a statement, the association condemned the act of violence, emphasizing its commitment to fostering peaceful and united communities. “Our entire Maya community is impacted by this heinous crime and we urge a thorough investigation by the authorities,” they stated.
The investigation continues as police gather statements and seek further information regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident. Rafael Cal, the suspect, remains at large.
