By Breaking Belize News Staff: Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado has revealed that a specialized unit has been established within the Police Department’s Special Branch to identify and intercept illegal firearms being used by criminal groups.
The announcement came during Sunday’s emergency press briefing following questions about the extensive firepower displayed during recent gang-related shootings.
Rosado acknowledged that investigators are increasingly concerned about the weapons available to certain criminal factions.
The Commissioner explained that the new unit will focus on gathering intelligence, locating illegal firearms and intercepting weapons before they can be used in violent attacks.
The initiative follows Friday’s deadly ambush along the Coastal Plain Highway, where four individuals were murdered in an attack involving numerous gunshots.
Rosado said the department recognizes the need to address the issue both operationally and through legislative reform.
National Security Minister Michel Chebat has announced plans to strengthen firearm legislation, including proposals for harsher penalties and mandatory custodial sentences for certain offences.
Police say the specialized unit will form part of the department’s broader strategy to disrupt criminal networks and prevent retaliatory shootings.
