Police Department’s report will set stage for next steps in Joseph Budna saga

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño was still on the defensive when questioned about the official investigation into the alleged abduction of Joseph Budna two weeks ago.

But he seemed more confident of obtaining answers from the Police Department and Commissioner Dr Richard Rosado through Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa, whom he asked this morning to produce the report on the investigation they started by “today, or by tomorrow at the very latest.”

“Once I get that report, I will see what it is they present, and then we will probably have to decide what is the next steps [are], whether or not we need to have an independent investigation,” he stated.

But he denied that there was any discussion about the Budna issue during Cabinet on Tuesday, and said he had not seen the video aired on Channel 7 News on Wednesday night, but he reiterated that the Government will not hesitate on the issue: “I repeat once again, this was not sanctioned by the Government of Belize; we have had absolutely nothing to do with it.”

Those next steps may include releasing the surveillance footage from public buildings in the area along Hospital Crescent and Queen Victoria Avenue – but it all depends on what the report says.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been in contact with Budna and is seeing to his issues.
