By Aaron Humes: Police Minister Oscar Mira has dismissed as “fake news,” according to KREM News, reports by the Opposition United Democratic Party’s Guardian Newspaper on social media that the Department stopped a plot to assassinate an elected official, reportedly an area representative from Orange Walk.
Members of a Belize City Southside gang were supposedly detained in connection with the report, with speculation that it concerned stolen “millions” of monies and possibly ties with the Commercial Free Zone.
An official statement from the Department says, “…the Belize Police Department categorically states that no such operation was conducted…”
Police further reminded that “…it is an offence for any person to maliciously fabricate or knowingly spread or publish, whether in writing, by word of mouth, or otherwise, false news or reports with the intent to create or foster public alarm or to cause public detriment.”
The Guardian did not cite any sources in connection to its reporting.
