By Aaron Humes: Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police, has openly acknowledged issues regarding police officers possibly being involved in drug trafficking operations within Northern Belize.
Williams addressed a note discovered at the scene of Raheem Usher’s body being discovered, which is believed to implicate local officers in activities related to drug flights. The note, which was reportedly written in clear handwriting, named several individuals as being involved in “continuing to bring down drug planes.”
While the Commissioner disputed claims that six officers were named, he confirmed that two police officers were mentioned, along with multiple civilians. “If you get yourself entangled with cartels, then you must suffer the consequences of it,” Williams asserted.
He elaborated on the Department’s proactive measures, citing a recent reshuffling of personnel within the Northern Districts due to credible intelligence suggesting police involvement with drug cartels. “It looks like the time is coming again that we will have to look at reshuffling,” he stated, hinting at potential further changes to ensure the integrity of the force.
Williams didn’t shy away from acknowledging a troubling reality within the ranks. “The public is fully aware that we do have police officers… in cahoots with these plane landers,” he admitted, emphasizing the need for accountability among law enforcement.
