By Aaron Humes, Belmopan: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams today told reporters that based on internal investigation and the result of a post-mortem examination of Daniel Caal, the detainee who died in a holding cell at the Belmopan Police Station last week, that Police officers did not cause or have anything to do with his death.
Caal died of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), caused by an inability of the lungs to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. He was also found to have chronic alcoholism.
An X-ray of his body done at a facility in Orange Walk Town revealed no bruise or other injury, internal or external.
Additionally, surveillance of the holding cell revealed nothing unusual during his time there – which ended with him apparently nude and covered in feces.
The Commissioner said he had directed that the detainee was to be afforded medical treatment and that his family was allowed to deliver medication and see him – an assertion they have denied.
Nonetheless, the Commissioner said the Department would be prepared to defend a lawsuit by the family, who has reportedly retained legal counsel.
