By Aaron Humes: With a week to go before general elections, the Police Department has been put under pressure to respond to a spate of violence both within Belize and directed against Belizeans in Mexico, albeit those allegedly associated with drug cartels.

Referring to a cartel-style execution of a young local artist in Corozal; two other Belizeans reportedly executed by cartel members in Chetumal, Mexico; and shootings including the murder of Gion Bernard on Wednesday morning in Belize City, Leader of the Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) Moses “Shyne” Barrow has pounced to say that “PUP Plan Belize has failed.” (This was before more incidents were reported in Orange Walk and Belize City on Wednesday night).
Opposition figures like Barrow have repeatedly pointed to the escalating violence to underscore the government’s perceived failures. But Commissioner of Police Chester Williams rose to defend the PUP’s track record, arguing that significant improvements have been made since the UDP administration was ousted in 2020. “You can’t expect the effects of decades of neglect to be gone overnight,” Williams stated, urging for patience as the administration works toward a safer Belize.
Williams referenced similar spikes in murders during 2017, when the country recorded eight killings over a single weekend and 2018, when there were six in 48 hours, and questioned where Barrow was then.
The Opposition has previously accused the Government and Police of “cooking the books” by de-emphasizing certain incidents as murders based on legal and other classifications in order to claim lower crime rates – charges the Government has denied.
