By Aaron Humes: 34-year-old Danny Mai lost his life in a road traffic accident last Saturday morning, resulting in charges for another Cayo resident.
Police say Kyle Vasquez has since been arrested and charged for [failure] to provide specimen and driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention as he was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Danny was reportedly returning home after a visit to his ailing mother in Blackman Eddy Village, Cayo District when the fatal collision took place. Witnesses say that a Toyota Corolla, seemingly attempting to overtake another vehicle, crashed into Danny’s motorbike. The impact caused him to be flung from his motorcycle.
Described as a careful and responsible driver by those who knew him, Danny’s untimely death has brought immense grief to his family, particularly his mother, Shirley Mai, who said he did not deserve his death.
In response to the rise in motorcycle accidents, Chief Executive Officer Chester Williams announced that the Ministry of Transport is considering a three-month moratorium on the issuance of motorcycle licenses. However, critics argue that the focus should primarily be on addressing the issue of impaired driving.
