By Aaron Humes: Police have apprehended a suspected mentally ill man connected to two unprovoked assaults on women that occurred this week in Belize City. Each attack, which took place on Orange Street and West Collet Canal, was captured on surveillance footage.
Video footage circulating on social media showed the suspect violently striking the women without any apparent reason. In the first incident, a street cleaner was suddenly assaulted. In the second incident, a woman was walking calmly when she was suddenly attacked, falling unconscious from the force of the punch. Witnesses of the second incident rallied to help the victim, chased down the assailant and reportedly administered a beating to him.
Upon capturing the suspect, officers noted that he had visible abrasions on his head. Police have taken him into custody and have initiated an investigation into the series of attacks. The police urge anyone with additional information to come forward. Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
