Police announce Christmas Anti-Crime Operation; reiterate importance of protection of personal property

By Aaron Humes: The Belize Police Department has commenced its Christmastime Anti-Crime Operations countrywide, preparing for a potential increase in crimes against property and the person.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith detailed Police’s plans and how citizens can look out for themselves at a briefing this afternoon: “I would have advised some weeks ago that this season is generally one that we have noted, over the years, as being a peak period of time in relation to property crimes. I urge persons to take the necessary precautions to safeguard themselves. As the Department continues to do its part, we have commenced anti-crime operations. We are here to remind the general public that citizen security is the responsibility of citizens as well as the Police Department. Our investigators continue to investigate these matters.”

Later, while discussing the spate of incidents in the isolated Guana Belly Road area of Bullet Tree Falls just outside San Ignacio Town, Cayo District, ASP Smith announced, “I must advise that police were able to recover the Dodge Ram pickup truck that was stolen in the previous incident, and as well as [arresting] Juan Luis Castellanos in a subsequent aggravated burglary incident in that area. I cannot underemphasize or overemphasize the need for persons to be very alert, especially when it is that they have established their homes in areas that are somewhat remote. Persons are in the habit of taking advantage of this. In both of those incidents, we noted that it was when the occupants of the home were making their way into their property, that they were accosted. This suggests that they were being observed by these persons. So, we ask that persons take the necessary precautions. If you are able to invest in CCTV (closed-circuit television) camera, if you’re able to invest in dash cams, this can all aid in terms of reducing the amount of property crimes that are in the country.”

Additionally, ASP Smith urged persons not to buy goods they suspect may have been stolen from others, thus inadvertently contributing to the prevalence of theft, robbery and burglary: “Yes, you may believe you are getting a good deal, but a good deal never comes from the misfortune of someone else.”
