PM says Santander’s Sugar Group’s U.S. $20million investment in refinery to target 75% of CARICOM Sugar demand

By Zoila Palma:  Santander Sugar Group celebrated a major milestone on March 2, 2026 with the official opening of its 10th harvest.

During the opening ceremony, Prime Minister John Briceño announced that Santander’s US$20 million investment in a new refinery will significantly reduce the Caribbean’s dependence on extra-regional sugar imports.

“Santander is ushering in a new era of growth and market consolidation for Belize’s sugar industry by partnering with the US based Sucro Ltd., and investing US$20 Million to construct the Caribbean Sugar Refinery,” Briceño said.

He explained that the refinery “will be operational by mid-2026” and “will be the first major sugar refinery in the Caribbean region.”

The facility aims to capture “75% of CARICOM’s demand for refined sugar,” reducing reliance on imports outside the region.

According to Briceño, “Today is therefore not only the start of another harvest season. It is evidence of a company embracing a modern approach to farming.” He added that the project “represents progress and it represents the ushering in of a new era of value-added production.”
