PM says Government looking for more relief as Belizeans battle crippling rising cost of living

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says his Government is continuing to look for ways to cushion Belizeans from the rising cost of living, arguing that many of the increases being felt locally are being driven by higher international prices for fuel, fertilizer and other imported goods.

Speaking following his 2026 State of the Nation Address, Briceño pointed to recently announced electricity relief measures, including the doubling of the GST exemption threshold on residential electricity bills from $100 to $200 per month.

The measure took effect September 1 and Government says it will benefit more than 91,000 residential customers, representing approximately 96 percent of residential accounts. Cabinet has also supported expanding eligibility for BEL’s Social Rate from 60 kilowatt-hours to 80 kilowatt-hours per month, potentially extending the preferential rate to about 17,000 customers.

Briceño rejected suggestions that his administration is disconnected from the financial pressures facing ordinary Belizeans, saying Government has to balance providing relief with maintaining revenues needed for education, health, infrastructure and other public services.
