By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Prime Minister John Briceño says he is concerned about the sharp spikes in electricity bills that have consumers venting online, but rejects the suggestion that BEL is taking advantage of customers.
Over the past two days, complaints have flooded Facebook, with some consumers reporting that their bills tripled.
“Certainly it’s something that myself as a citizen and more importantly as Prime Minister, I’m concerned,” Briceño told reporters on Friday.
He said he has spoken to Minister Michel Chebat and asked him to meet with BEL Executive Chairman Young and the PUC, with a media briefing expected early next week.
Asked whether BEL is taking advantage of consumers, the Prime Minister was direct.
“No, it is not true,” he said, adding that the country is “suffering 13 years of UDP neglect” and that the previous administration did not invest in BEL’s infrastructure or transmission lines.
The comments come as the UDP demands that the PUC roll back the Cost of Power Adjustment, or COPA, charge, and explain how close to $400 million invested in the energy sector has benefited Belizeans.
