By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño underscored Santander’s cutting-edge and technology-driven operations as he addressed the company’s 10th harvest season on March 2, 2026, at the Santander Sugar Factory.
He described this year’s crop as transformative, noting that the company will not only produce bulk raw sugar but also refine nearly 40,000 metric tons of sugar once its new refinery is completed.
“This year’s harvest season, however, is a very, very, special one, as the company will not only harvest sugar cane and process it into bulk raw sugar…it will also be refining close to 40,000 metric tons of sugar late in the crop as its state-of-the-art refinery is expected to be completed by mid-2026,” the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Santander has embraced a modern and scientific approach to farming.
He pointed out that the company utilizes modern tractors, laser and high-tech equipment for land preparation, raised beds, and drainage systems.
High-level digital technology is integrated into field planning, data collection, and overall management. “Santander is using modern tractors, along with laser and high-tech equipment to level, build raised beds and drain their fields prior to planting,” he noted.
He further highlighted the company’s consistent productivity, attributing it to innovation and technology.
“This modern approach to sugarcane farming is the main reason why Santander has been able to achieve average yields of between 28-30 metric tons of cane per acre consistently in their fields over the last 10 years,” Briceño stated.
Beyond farming, Santander’s mechanical harvesting and transportation systems also set industry standards.
“With such an efficient system in place, it is not surprising that Santander achieves a world standard KILL to MILL time of 5.3 hours,” the Prime Minister added.
