PM denies Allan Pollard was punished over BTL-Speednet ‘No’ vote, says Pollard has bright future

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño has rejected speculation that Belize City Councillor Allan Pollard Jr. lost political support from him because Pollard voted against Belize Telemedia Limited’s proposed acquisition of Speednet Communications Limited.

Pollard was one of two Social Security Board representatives on the BTL board who voted against the proposed acquisition, along with union representative Anissa Perdomo.

The matter attracted significant public and union opposition before BTL ultimately withdrew its submission to acquire Speednet. The Public Utilities Commission has since formally recorded the withdrawal.

Pollard subsequently lost the PUP’s August 30 Belize City mayoral convention to Deputy Mayor Eluide Miller, prompting speculation about whether his position on the BTL deal had cost him support within the party.

Briceño denied that suggestion on Wednesday. Asked whether Pollard could nevertheless be removed from government-appointed boards, the Prime Minister said appointees generally serve at the pleasure of Government and are not guaranteed permanent appointments.

However, Briceño spoke positively about Pollard, describing him as someone with “a bright future” in the People’s United Party and Government and saying the young politician should continue to be developed as a public servant.
