By Horace Palacio: Prime Minister John Briceño has announced that if the People’s United Party (PUP) wins the March 12, 2025, general elections, it will be his final term in office. As Belize holds elections every five years, Briceño has confirmed that once this term is completed, he will retire from active politics and allow for a new leader to take his place.
Briceño acknowledged that several individuals have expressed interest in succeeding him, but emphasized that the decision will ultimately be left to the people of Orange Walk Central and the PUP’s internal selection process. He assured that when the time comes, he will fully support the party’s chosen successor.
While political leaders in Belize rarely step down voluntarily, Briceño appears determined to defy tradition by ensuring an orderly transfer of power. Whether his retirement will significantly reshape the political landscape remains to be seen, but for now, his focus remains on securing another term for the PUP before stepping away at the end of his tenure in 2030.
