By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says the government is continuing discussions on the future leadership of the Customs and Excise Department, with an announcement expected either by the end of October or early November.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Briceño was asked whether the contract of the current Comptroller of Customs would be renewed for another year or whether the government intended to appoint a new head of the department.
The Prime Minister confirmed that discussions were ongoing but declined to disclose the government’s preferred course of action.
He said an announcement should be made shortly, possibly before the end of the month or during the first part of November.
Briceño did not identify a possible replacement or explain what factors would influence the decision.
The Customs and Excise Department is responsible for customs administration, revenue collection and enforcement of the country’s customs laws.
For now, the government has not publicly confirmed whether it intends to extend the existing leadership arrangement or proceed with a new appointment.
