By Zoila Palma: Today, Santander Sugar Group marked a major milestone as Harvest Season 10 officially opened.
Santander’s production excellence, innovation, and sustainable growth continues to strengthen Belize’s agro-industrial sector.
Prime Minister John Briceño praised Santander’s adoption of modern agricultural practices, crediting technology and innovation for its consistent high yields.
“To address the FIELD PRODUCTIVITY challenges, Santander is using modern tractors, along with laser and high-tech equipment to level, build raised beds and drain their fields prior to planting,” he said. He added that the company integrates digital technology in “field planning, data collection, tracking and overall management from planting to harvesting.”
Briceño noted that Santander replants fields on an eight-year cycle and applies “a scientific approach to sugarcane farming.”
As a result, he said, “Santander has been able to achieve average yields of between 28-30 metric tons of cane per acre consistently in their fields over the last 10 years.”
When it comes to harvesting and transport, he declared, “Santander is an industry leader in Belize.”
Highlighting efficiency, he said the company achieves “a world standard KILL to MILL time of 5.3 hours.”
Santander’s new production cycle strengthens industrial efficiency, energy optimization, and international quality standards while creating lasting economic and social value for Belize and our regional partners.
