By Horace Palacio: Prime Minister John Briceño has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to conduct redistricting after the upcoming general elections. While acknowledging that the process has been long overdue, Briceño explained that delays in Parliament and opposition from both major parties prevented the Elections and Boundaries Commission’s report from moving forward.

Briceño emphasized that if re-elected, redistricting will be at the top of the government’s agenda, ensuring that it is completed well before the next election cycle. He reasoned that rushing the process now, so close to the election, would be counterproductive, as it would leave aspiring politicians without enough time to properly connect with their constituencies.

With Belize’s last redistricting exercise dating back to 2005, the issue has remained a controversial topic. Many critics argue that the current electoral divisions create an imbalance in voter representation, giving some constituencies far more voting power than others. While the prime minister’s assurance may offer some hope, whether it will finally be acted upon remains to be seen.
