By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Prime Minister John Briceño says government is looking at the long-term future of Belize’s healthcare system, but insists there are currently no plans to charge Belizeans for basic NHI services.
His comments came after the UDP warned that the new NHI bill could eventually force Belizeans to pay contributions to access healthcare. Opposition Leader Tracy Panton criticized the proposal and referred to it as “National Hustle Insurance.”
In response, Briceño argued that the legislation is aimed at strengthening and expanding healthcare services in the future, including secondary and tertiary care. He pointed out that countries such as Costa Rica operate healthcare systems where workers contribute and in return receive wider medical coverage.
The Prime Minister also said government wants to improve local healthcare options so Belizeans do not have to travel abroad for treatment whenever possible.
Despite those assurances, concerns continue growing among some Belizeans who fear additional deductions or healthcare costs could eventually become reality.
