By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño today announced a record $488.6 million allocation to Belize’s Capital II Budget during his 2026 Budget Presentation, outlining major investments in infrastructure, health, education, and community development.
According to the Prime Minister, the funding represents the portion of the national capital program financed directly from government revenue rather than donor financing.
A significant portion of the spending will go toward infrastructure development, including $21.9 million to upgrade the George Price Highway from Belize City to Belmopan and $8 million to upgrade the Philip Goldson Highway from Mile 8 to Mile 24. Additional allocations include $4.6 million for the Santa Familia Bridge, $3.8 million for the replacement of the Belize City Swing Bridge, and $3.5 million for the replacement of the BElCAN Bridge. The government also earmarked about $46 million for nationwide road, street, and drainage maintenance.
In the health sector, the government will spend $57 million to operationalize the National Health Insurance (NHI) program, $52.5 million for Central Medical Stores, and $33.7 million in operational support for the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority.
Education initiatives include $2.6 million for the Healthy Start Feeding Program, $2.2 million to expand internet access to schools, and $13 million in education grants.
The budget also outlines several social and community development programs, including $6.2 million for constituency development programs, $5.1 million for community support and small grants, $3.5 million for grocery and food assistance, and $1.5 million in support for small farmers. Funding is also allocated for youth anti-violence initiatives and social transformation programs.
Additionally, $18 million has been set aside for land acquisition payments and land surveys, while $1.6 million will go toward maintenance of sporting facilities across the country.
Prime Minister Briceño described the spending plan as a record investment aimed at strengthening infrastructure, expanding social support, and improving access to essential services for Belizeans.
