By Zoila Palma: Today, Prime Minister John Briceno held a bilateral meeting with President of Guatemala Bernardo Arevalo on the margins of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA.
The meeting was cordial and respectful and provided an opportunity for discussions on issues related to security, peace, trade and investment.
“The Prime Minister expressed his strong concern regarding the recent aggressive and illegal actions of members of the Guatemalan Armed Forces,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
PM Briceno and President Arevalo agreed that every effort must be made to ensure that these activities are not repeated and pledged greater cooperation at the military command level on the ground and in our respective maritime spaces.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a lasting, peaceful resolution of the Guatemalan claim through the ICJ process.
They further agreed that with peace comes greater opportunities for improved and enhanced trade and investment which will serve the mutual interest of our nations.
