By Aaron Humes: A representative from the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) is in Belize for an official visit, aimed at reinforcing the relationship between Palestine and Belize and advocating for the Palestinian cause. Mohamed Salam, the PLO Commissioner Coordinator for the Anti-Apartheid Department, arrived on Tuesday, where he was welcomed by Nancy Marin, leader of the Belize People’s Front.

The PLO is a Palestinian nationalist coalition that is internationally recognized as the official representative of the Palestinian people in both the Palestinian territories and the diaspora, although it is currently in the minority in the Legislative Council for Palestine after Hamas’ victory in elections last held at least two decades ago.

In an interview at the airport, Salam expressed optimism about the potential outcomes of the visit. “We are hopeful that we will do a lot of work together to help the Palestinian cause and also to cement the relationship between Belize and Palestine,” he stated. His agenda includes important meetings with Prime Minister John Briceño; former Prime Minister Said Musa, who is perhaps Belize’s most notable individual of Palestinian descent; and his son Kareem, the Minister of Home Affairs.

Salam emphasized the significance of enforcing international decisions related to the Palestinian situation, mentioning the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). He voiced a desire to discuss measures that could prevent the import of agricultural products from Israeli settlements into Belize.

Additionally, Salam highlighted the possibility of establishing scholarship programs between the University of Belize and Palestinian universities, recognizing Belize’s support for the Palestinian people, particularly during the recent conflict following the events of October 7, 2023.

A ceasefire in the ongoing conflict has now been negotiated and approved by Israel’s Cabinet and is expected to take effect on Sunday. Salam noted that the failure or success of such an agreement depends on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership: “If it does not materialize, it will be Netanyahu’s fault.”

In a sign of goodwill, the PLO delegation is scheduled to be hosted for lunch by the father-son Musa tandem. Following these meetings, the delegation will also visit the University of Belize to foster academic collaboration.
